Module 3 - Section - 12 - Master 1
Having standard Master copies of the basic behaviour modifications will save you a huge amount of time when it comes to writing reports for clients. What must be borne in mind is that these will always have to be changed slightly to suit the current client you are working with, and also you don’t want them to sound like you are just copying and pasting, so always remember to keep the personal touch:-
- Mentioning the dog as only he or she, to me makes it sound very impersonal, so what we do is have my Master notes for each behaviour modification, and then where the dog’s name (instead of he or she) can be mentioned, we have xxxx and we can insert the dog’s name here. What we then do is copy and paste onto my notes for clients and just insert the dog’s name – very easy to see where you have to make the changes and avoids the embarrassing situation where you call the dog Princess instead of Butch, because you forgot to change a name! This would apply to ALL your standard not just the basic House Rules
- Ignoring Dog when arriving home. For examples, ensure they suit the current situation e.g. if client is first meeting the dog at a metal gate where dog can see them, then change the notes to suit the clients circumstances. The same situation would apply for Attention on Your terms etc. Remember to mention things that the dog actually does as well and not just be general – if their particular dog always puts a paw on their lap for attention, then mention this point, don’t just generalize and mention other things that dogs do for attention – be specific to their own dog.
These are for marks and will become your Masters and marking in this situation will be very strict. Ensure that you have the correct procedure the exercises / modifications need to be done in - marks will be deducted for incorrect information. The closer you keep these to a summary format, the easier for the client to follow – remember you are giving the client the modifications to change behaviour in a simple and direct manner – they are not doing a course on canine behaviour!
House Rules. Here you will give client the basic notes on each of below in a simple summary format, either followed or proceeded by a short paragraph as to why this work is being undertaken:-
- Ignoring your dog when arriving home – in this situation the owner meets the dog as soon as they enter the home.
- Attention on your terms or not at all – general explanation as dog does a variety of the ‘normal’ attention seeking behaviours.
