Module 4 - Section  - 1A - Questionnaires & Pre-Planning Part 2

Don’t worry about whether or not you were correct in the last section but it will be interesting to see how you did by yourself, so do check below where you will find Maillot's questionnaire with the red dots as well as the Summary below.  You are now going to be doing more work on Questionnaires and these are the main points as in Part 1 - they are repeated below as a reminder as very important that you become comfortable with working with them - we suggest that you type out the Summary format and keep with you for doing Questionnaire's in future

Pre Consult Planning (Repeat of Part 1)

What is the Behaviour Concern/s to be addressed?

The reason we are asking this is for you to look at the specifics that pertain to the behaviour concern. You will come across other concerns (or possible future concerns) and these you will look at (D) below to list them. Keeping in mind the behaviour concern you were called in for helps to make you focused.
Points to bear in mind:-
  • Can the behaviour concerns all be addressed in one session?
  • If not, decide which are the most important and why and contact and advise client and rather than book two appointments, suggest that you tackle the first lot and after resolved then an appointment can be booked for the 2nd session. Give the financial implications.

Possible factors contributing to the behaviour

Summary (one sentence on average) of what factors you believe contributed to the concern/s occurring.
Remember no judging client. On average you will have ‘Combined human/canine social structure out of balance’ as a reason, and on average this is where you would put in House Rules and why doing them – to balance the social structure and raise client so that dog feels more secure.

Aims - Summary – one sentence headings only. Summary of your aims – this will be to change the behaviour and help you to remember what has to be done. Also easier to see what modifications will be needed. Use the Behaviour Concerns as your main headings and add in more if required such as Mental and Physical Stimulation – Improving Human/Canine Social structure, Medication and even General if need be.
On average you will always have one such as “To raise owner in combined human/canine social structure so that dog more likely to listen to owner which will lower the instances of the xxxxxx behaviour occurring’. Here you would bring in House Rules to raise owner in the combined social structure, or parts thereof as mentioned above.

Modifications - Under each of the Aims Headings, you will have the modifications to be brought in. This helps you to plan and prepare for your consult and your report. In the actual report we find it easier to list as 'How we are going to overcome xxxx'' and then put the modifications you intend to bring in - point form. In your report these will be your sub-headings under the Aims

Questions for client – to ask either before or at session – either all at once when you sit down, at the time you are going to deal with that specific section, or before the session if the information is really needed.

Possible future work – this is not always applicable, but if you do see an area/s that should be attended too at a later stage, then note it down and discuss with owner at the end of the session. I normally suggest to client that let’s sort out existing problem now, and then look at next step once resolved. Explain to client why this should be attended too. I find that putting a large red dot next to each area that incorporates any of the above is a help – I can instantly see areas to be addressed easily. I have put a summary of the above at the end of the questionnaire. I find that keeping all together on one form is easier than having multiple forms – good for easy access and at the end of a session, I will page through the questionnaire and tick off the sections done – that way I don’t forget anything.

After the consult there will be a good change that the majority of your Pre Consult Planner will become your Report to your client.
